What is the difference for industrial dewatering?

Date Issued:2026-11-05

Compare a screw press and a belt filter press on the same duty, not by headline capacity or cake-moisture number. A screw press uses a rotating screw and screened cylinder to convey and compress solids. A belt press uses moving porous belts, gravity drainage and roller pressure. A screw press may suit an enclosed line with limited operator attention; a belt press can suit larger continuous sludge flows where wash water and operator checks are available. Neither is universally better.

How the machines work

A screw press line normally includes a feed hopper or pump, screw and screen assembly, drive, liquid collection and discharge. The screw conveys wet solids through a narrowing space. Liquid passes through the screen while retained material leaves as cake. HUATAO's dewatering screw press is the relevant product reference.

A belt press spreads conditioned sludge across two moving porous belts. It drains by gravity first, then passes through a wedge and roller section. Belt tracking, tension, scrapers and wash sprays are part of the line.

Feed characterization

Before sizing either machine, identify the stream. Primary sludge, biological sludge, chemical sludge, digestate and food-processing residue behave differently. Record average and peak flow, total solids, particle size, fiber, grease, ash, grit and foreign objects. Note feed variation.

For a screw press, check whether solids can be conveyed and retained by the screen. Very dilute feed may need thickening first. Long fibers can wrap around rotating parts; grit can accelerate wear; fine solids can pass through or blind the screen. For a belt press, check whether sludge spreads evenly and can be conditioned to drain without smearing or washing through the belt.

Operating variables

Factor

Screw press

Belt filter press

Separation

Screw conveyance, screen drainage, compression

Gravity drainage, wedge and roller pressure

Main settings

Feed, speed, screen opening, outlet resistance

Feed distribution, polymer, belt speed, tension, tracking

Cleaning

Screen/ring cleaning; design-dependent

Belt wash sprays, commonly continuous

Routine checks

Screen, screw, drive, gearbox, discharge

Belts, rollers, scrapers, tracking and sprays

Possible fit

Moderate solids load, enclosed line

Large steady sludge flow, available wash water and staff

These are tendencies. A belt press may provide high throughput in one line. A screw press may offer a contained arrangement and lower wash-water demand on some designs. Energy, polymer, cake solids and maintenance depend on the model and feed.

Capacity and acceptance testing

Clarify whether capacity means wet tonnes per hour, cubic metres per hour or kilograms of dry solids per hour. Calculate dry-solids loading from measured wet feed and total-solids fraction, then allow for peaks, operating hours, cleaning and downtime.

A fair trial records feed rate, dry-solids loading, cake solids, filtrate, polymer, power, wash water, labour and cleaning. Agree on sampling and laboratory methods first.

For a screw press, inspect screen opening and open area. HUATAO's screw press screen cylinder is a useful component reference. A centrifuge machine may be assessed as a third option where its different separation principle and service needs make sense.

Procurement checklist

Ask each supplier to identify the exact feed behind its performance figures. Confirm model, screen specification, motor and gearbox, control scope, utilities, footprint, cleaning access, wear parts, exclusions and service scope. Include polymer preparation and wash-water handling where required. Ask for a representative material trial and results for both solids capture and cake condition.

Include equipment, installation, pumps, conveyors, power, polymer, water, labour, wear parts, maintenance and cake disposal in the cost model. If separated liquid returns to treatment, include its hydraulic and solids load.

Failure analysis

Screw press cake remains too wet: Check feed solids, screen blinding, feed rate and outlet resistance before changing settings.

Solids escape through the screen: Review particle size, opening and screen condition; a damaged screen may also cause losses.

Screw press capacity falls: Check feed consistency, bridging, deposits, long fibers and foreign objects.

Belt press cake is unstable: Check polymer preparation and dose, feed distribution, belt speed and tension.

Belt tracks to one side: Inspect tracking sensors, rollers, tension and material distribution. Follow the maker's adjustment procedure.

Wash performance drops: Check spray nozzles, water pressure and wash-water quality.

Maintenance and safety

For a screw press, inspect screen and screw wear, gearbox oil, bearings, seals, discharge parts, guards and liquid outlets. Record motor current and unusual noise. For a belt press, inspect belt seams and surface, rollers, scrapers, bearings, tension, tracking and wash sprays. Clean polymer equipment and verify dosing.

Before opening guards or clearing a blockage, isolate and lock out the equipment. Never clear a jam while the machine is energized.

FAQs

1. Which press suits a small industrial plant? A screw press may fit limited staffing and moderate solids loads; verify capacity by test.

2. Which suits a large wastewater flow? A belt press may suit large continuous sludge flows, depending on solids loading and site resources.

3. Can a screw press handle every sludge? No. Fine, dilute or poorly conveyable feeds may need pre-treatment.

4. Is polymer always required? No. It depends on feed and process design.

5. What needs attention on a belt press? Belt condition, tracking, tension, rollers and wash sprays.

6. What needs attention on a screw press? The screen and screw are central performance and wear items.

7. How should cake dryness be specified? Use representative testing and state feed and sampling conditions in the purchase specification.

8. What should a supplier provide? Model data, test basis, utilities, wear parts, maintenance, exclusions and service scope.
